Summer Wings

Alas, you can never recreate your own works.

The original version of this artwork was done by me two years back in my Fine Arts class. Back then, I was really in for art. It had nothing to do with foul intentions to make it big from these creations. The idea was to just enjoy doing what I did.

As of now, I am suffering from some serious editing problems, being a total loser at anything cool (like computers, internet and blogging). The original version will be uploaded once I learn some neat editing.

Anyway, about the artwork now: This one is basically line drawing. Making a horse is usually tough for the artistically challenged (like me) but I used simple geometry for this. A small tip here: If you are failing to sketch out what you wish to then just create an image of it inside your head and plainly cheat! Yes, cheat. Cheating is all you have to do to create what you want to paper out. Follow the pattern of what you can imagine. Take reference if that gets too hard. Making horses is easy once the trick comes across.
After the plain pencil sketch, I decided on the colours. There were three colour schemes I had in mind and each brought an altogether different feel to the same piece.
The first scheme was greens with bright pinks and purples and red along with a light blue sky. Such a scheme made the artwork look really happy, cute and somewhat kiddy. The other scheme was blacks, grays and whites. The second scheme gave a gloomy, dark and eerie feel to the artwork. The third is the one used in the picture. This scheme was somewhere between the two extremes with mild earth colours. It's a little more on the black side though. The artwork brings about just the feel I wanted to get. It can obviously be done way better by a good and more experienced artist.
About the artwork, well, it shows a unicorn flying, not too high. It's not on cloud 9 and has gray, old and rather mechanical wings. And even though the unicorn is gray which in this case represents a mediocrity of sorts (black- bad; white- good; gray- midway) but the rising sun does add colour and hope to it's life, the earth around and of course to the artwork which ultimately turns out to be a more optimistic work rather than some cynical piece of depressing shit.

About the colouring process now: Well, poster colours come easy for artworks that are not too detailed or intricate, like these. Hence, I chose to use poster colours for this work. As it is, I am a major failure at water colours. So then anyway, a first coat of poster colours made the artwork look too dull, badly coloured and totally disastrous. It was then that water colours were used by me. Now water colours are well... umm, watery (that's how lame I can get). The good thing about water colours is that somehow, you never know what it'd do to your work. After a roughly done first coat of water colours, the artwork started looking bright enough and then some finer details (though roughly brought up) were done with black on the unicorn's wings and body. A little was done over the small spruce trees far off in the background (it's funny how I used the trees of the Arctic to represent an earthy desert type area). I was done though I wasn't satisfied enough but before I could ruin the work any further my mom stopped me from yet another depressing "colouring" disaster. And because I had to quench the urge to do something more so, I took a pic of this unicorn artwork, transferred it to my computer and added my initials (Bejin Hakumei) through MS Paint.
And yeah, the paper that I have used is simple cartridge sheet.

A little something about the title: Though the title might seem flashy, overdone, underdone, lame, or retarded by some wannabe losers, it's just how I could describe the work. It is a self portrait of sorts (what a joke!). I am usually elled and effed but somehow I never lose hope enough to die. Summer Wings is but a means to bring out the end of the artwork which is all about being tired of life yet continuing because of hope which keeps you going, just somehow.

I do realise I am absolutely no good at explaining things so I might just chuck the idea of trying to explain things and only post the relevant scans from next time. But then again, maybe not!
